Backstory: In 2013, I created a series of iPad wallpapers that corresponded to historic events that had occurred on the 13th day of each calendar month. This one refers to 13 June 1525, the day Martin Luther married Katharina von Bora, against the celibacy rule decreed by the Roman Catholic Church for priests and nuns. Ms. von Bora was apparently one of 12 nuns Luther had helped escape from the Nimbschen Cistercian convent in April 1523, when he arranged for them to be smuggled out in herring barrels. Hopeless romantics.
